I can't figure these guys out. I'm driving along, then I spot a pilot/escort vehicle on the other side of the highway, doing about 70, WIDE LOAD placards all over the place, flags waving in the breeze, overhead
yellow light turning, overhead clearance pole on the front bumper.... but no heavy, wide load behind the
guy. Then... bingo... miles behind this guy, comes a flatbed hauling some pretty big stuff. Now I have
never hauled wide loads, nor have I been a pilot/escort driver. So, my question is (I think) isn't there a law,
understanding, or something, that these advance vehicles be somewhat close to the wide load that
    they're in front of?

If it was running a height pole they need to be way ahead in case the load
    has to detour a overpass.

Im an RGN, when im tall, I want him at least a mile ahead just incase I need to detour. If wide, maybe 1/2 mile depending on where im at.

I think its a personal preference. Unless I dont know of a state that requires a certain distance.

    cke and Siinman Thank this.

Sometimes they gain distance on hills. My high pole can do 70 uphills… I can do 35-40?

    cke Thanks this.

Since I'm already here... which post?

Some escorts are bad about keeping a certain distance from their load. They just set the cruse and space off.

I don’t care what the state says about escorts distance to the load. I want my back door right on my ### and my front door out a 1/4 mile on regular loads. Little further on high pole loads on an unfamiliar route. On two lanes I want the front door way out front if we are real wide. Mostly to look out for Other OD loads that have their front door right on their front bumper. Might as well slap a light bar on their hood, it provides the same service to the public.
