Would that depend on whether the new driver had a CDL or a CLP ?

If you are training or supervising the person behind the wheel those are on-duty activities. Most confusion comes when first deciding what status (Driving, On-Duty, Sleeper, Off-Duty) benefits the driver's Hours of Service (HOS) and then trying to creatively interpret the HOS regulations.

If the activity is work-related, or at the direction of the boss or benefit of the customer, it's probably always On-Duty, if it's not Driving. Few people ever take up the personal hobby of riding in a vehicle and teaching or supervising the person driving the vehicle. If training/supervising of a driver isn't On-Duty, what possible duty status could it be?

    ZVar Thanks this.

Wrong. In both cases it's a yes. It's work at the direction of the motor carrier so on duty.

Then there is the fact team drivers can only be off duty in the passenger seat for a maximum of 3 hours before OR after 7 hours in the sleeper berth.
