Yes both require fingerprints. I have all three and I can't remember what I paid for the passport. You will need to get fingerprinted for you Haz-Mat endorsement as well. It was around $90.00 or so if I remember right. There is no reduction in cost. It is redundant but I guess the government feels that it is necessary to charge for every item you mentioned. Streamlining and common sence is not in their creed.

I am fortunate in that my company reimburses drivers for those costs. Unfortunately, most do not. However, it is in your best interest to obtain all of them. The passport for travel and the others will make you more of a more valued employee to the trucking sector.

    Passport is 100.00
Passport card for Mexico and Canada only 50.00
    Hazmat 90.00
    Twic 132.50 **

** If you have your haz mat prior to the TWIC, it cost 105.50.

I am just getting my CDL (take driving test monday), and am trying to make myself look more employable, so looking at getting a twic card. Is it really needed, & did you all pay for it yourself, or did your employing company pay for it? I do have my Hazmat, so does that quialify for a background check to lower the cost of it? Give me the lowdown folks, thanks!

As a newbie I would wait and let the training company you end up with pay for it. It dose make getting hired easier but as a new guy thats a moot point.

Speaking from experience(I'm a TWIC card holder), I'd say it IS a good idea to have one at ports of entry. With this said, few places actually ask to see them. The places that DO ask to see them, DO guard the area like Nazi's(ie NO card, NO Dice).

Any company that requires you to have one but won't pay for it is a company I would no longer work for. I told my company at the time. You want me to get one, You pay for it AND my time to do it. I don't work for free. That second part may or may not work. I'm a big enough a-hole that I get away with stuff not every one can.

Not all co's require them, but it is wise to have one. Point, guys like you that refuse to get them means there is a load available for me. I think before long you will need them to haul military loads. Unlike hazmat loads a twic load does not make you stick out and be a pull around at the scale house. Also you don't work for free, but how much do you make while waiting for a load that you can haul?

I had to pay for mine and it helps in the hiring process if you already hold one if you are looking to change jobs. In this economy, any possible advantage you have over another prospective applicant is helpful.
