7/3 or 8/2 split?

Need more info, we’re you able to drive about 4hrs before stopping for a pickup or break? Did you get 2-3hrs in then or longer?

 

I don't think a split will help you in this situation. A split won't add drive time to your clock in lieu of a 10. If you needed to delay your 14, but still had enough drive time on your clock, splits work wonderfully for that. But, A split won't give you any 'new' drive time before a 10 is done. Splits work ro add flexibility, but they don't give you anymore drive time. They just help you utilize your 11 hour and 14 hour clock. But, no way to 'cheat' by using a split to add drive time before a regular 10 hour.
If you start a split with 1 hour of drivetime left and 4 hours on your 14, after the first part of the split is taken, regardless of it being the off duty or longer sleeper berth portion of tue split, you'll still only have 1 hour of drive time and 4 hours on your 14.

 

You definitely can only finish this load on time through a split sleeper. However, you only have enough time if you've already taken at least a 3 hr break at some point during the day. That way you could stop for only 7 hours tonight and get back enough drive time to complete the remaining 3.5-4 hour drive.

If you haven't stopped for at least 3 hours at some point in your current driving shift, then there's no way to make this load on time, legally-speaking.

There's only 16.5 hrs between 13:30 1/27 and 06:00 1/28. You said it's a 9-hour drive. That leaves only 7.5 off-duty/sleeper between 13:30 and 06:00. You need to take a 10-hr break if you haven't completed part of split sleeper before 13:30.

Better notify dispatch or the customer of arriving 2.5 late.

 

I assumed he hadn't, as he said he hasn't done a split before. But, perhaps he did have a 3 hour off duty (or SB) stretch during his current duty cycle he hasn't designated it as a split yet. Good catch!!!

 

Once you have used up your driver hours there is no shortcut to taking your 10 hour break. For a split break to help you you must stop driving before you have used up your drive hours. Any day where you have a long off-duty period of 2 hours or more is a day you MIGHT gain an advantage by taking a split sleeper break. Split sleeper is easy to screw up and get an "egregious violation" instead of a less serious minor HOS violation. I don't take split-breaks unless I start the day expecting to taking one. It's just too easy to wind up going over your HOS by multiple hours instead of 45 minutes.

 

Like if he had to wait at the shipper earlier in the day. That's why I always go SB at customers. Just my personal cya. LOL
