There are parts of 299, east and west both, that will be problematic every year. The road was initially built on old buggy trails without much thought to the weight and traffic they face today. As time goes on the problems get worse and more expensive to solve.
I like to drive it in the daylight. At night, even in the canyon, it's easy to over-drive your headlights and wind up as a paint spot on a big boulder or a tree that came down off the cut. Cal-Trans is supposed to patrol that at night with rock plows but nobody puts much faith in them.
Watch out for the narrows just east of Burnt Ranch. Sharp turns, straight down to the river if you're headed west, and lots of rocks in the road after a rain. Very tight when meeting another truck.
Buckhorn isn't a factor anymore since they straightened some of it. Unless it's snowing. If you're going across at night be sure to lay on your horn when you go by the sand house. The CalTrans guys will be in there napping and it really pisses them off.

Down along the river is a real crap shoot. Some years it slides, some years it doesn't. There are three active slides between Weaverville and Willow Creek and that doesn't count the usual slip outs and culvert collapses.
If you're coming down Oregon Summit ( the first hard pull out of Weaverville) west bound believe the speed limit signs, Also, coming down that same hill at night, if you start down that last long straight stretch before you hit the river and you don't see any lights, especially in the winter, get as much heat as you can on your windshield and your mirrors as quick as you can.. You're about to discover the famous Trinity River freezing fog. If you hit it without heat it's like somebody painted your windshield shut.
The bridges along the river will be iced up too, especially the ones with a curved approach and departure and a curved bridge.

I definitely wouldn't start over 299 in either direction without checking with CalTrans first.

Just like any other winter mountain driving, bring extra groceries and warm clothes. Eureka is high priced on diesel but I'd still top off before I started across.

I drive that road about once a month and have for close to 7 yrs. Usually drive part way back in the dark before sun comes up. It just seems every year it gets beaten down more. The fires last summer and the slides since haven't helped. I fill up in Corning when heading there. I did catch a bolt in steer tire just as I got to Blue lake glad it happened there and not somwhere in nowheresville. Still a fun time $$ getting it replaced

State inspection needed in this backwards state . And its already done.. I run a tight ship so it’s worth it. Especially now since it’s almost worth what I paid for it 15 years ago…

No, just cold — -8 this morning and got up to a balmy 16 — but the sun was shining and no wind, no place I’d rather be
