On another thread I have a NTC 290 small cam, that has a couple bad liners. Needing an inframe kit but I have obtained a Cummins CPL manual. I’ve got about 5-6 cpl’s that share the same cam and non aftercooled. There’s 5-6 more that share the same cam but they’re aftercooled and I’m not sure if an aftercooled kit will work in a non aftercooled engine. I would like to build this engine back to 350hp and there’s a couple cpl’s for small cam 350, with the same cam. I talked to a mechanic that was worried about a kit larger than the original 290, because of the clocking of the cam shaft gear. He suggested that the cam shaft gear in a larger hp cpl, may have an advanced gear for the injection. I get what he’s saying but this guy is sometimes full of #### and likes to hear his self talk. Is there any truth to this. Oh, and also, I called Cummins and they basically blowed me off since I wasn’t working on a N14 or newer. Thanks for any advice.

Just get the cooler off a BCl or ll. No problem. CPL book should have cam timing listed. If it requires an offset I thought that was listed also.

Yes, there is a difference in some of the cam gear timing with the offset key.

What is your CPL of the engine you have? I can probably find the cam key listing in my book and match it to bigger HP cpl.

With an after cooler and the right cam key, injectors, and pump calibration, you build a 400 or whatever you want.

My engine was a 315, I built it back to 400 with CPL 625.

You can still buy those cam keys, just need someone who knows to press the gear off and get the key changed and gear reinstalled.

But the final timing will be with the gaskets behind the cam followers….

I’ll see if it’s in my books and see what it matches up to, thinking it will work with a 350 no problem…

Everything in the Cummins CPL book I have that suggest NTC 350 small cam and a cam that matches, are all aftercooled engines(0021, 0147, 0154, 0278, 0384). Now the book shows the NTC 335 in non aftercooled, with matching cam and CPL’s, 0070, 0174 and 0197.

What about a CPL 0248? If any of those CPL numbers you listed time within around .050 of your 0217 the cam should be keyed the same. Timing should be adjustable with cam follower gaskets only. Some small cams had different cam follower housings, watch out. If you have multiple choices maybe call the old guy at you pump shop. Were any of them common? If so use that one.
If you do not put a cooler on it just set the fuel to spec not spec plus 10%.

    The 0217, is AV(-.050)
    The 0248, is AH(-.035)
    Now explain this to me.

Those are injection timing codes for measuring push rod travel. That is with a jig timing tool.
AV is 0.049 (fast) through 0.051 (slow)
    AH is 0.034 0.038
I liked um fast or faster and measured every box. We were twisting them up. Running standard RPM run standard fast timing.
