there is a thread here with a guy named Pharmphil(?) He never owned or drove a truck. I made it to page 36. Definately read that thread. I need to finish reading the thread, maybe to subscribe to it.

Got lots of $$$$? Run a business before?

Cats aren't known for sipping fuel, and parts are expensive. How many miles on it?

'98 is pretty old. CRST? I would do some serious research on them.

CRST is the only company that I know of right now that will let me sign a 1998 Truck. It has 785,000. I talked to a mechanic that has been working on it (Maintenance work) and I asked him how much to rebuild the motor. He told me the motor doesn't need rebuilding. He said maybe do a lot preventive motor work for about 1200 and that's it. Also, if you can find that thread let me know. If you can message me the link and if you know anyother carriers that will let me lease a 1998 truck send me that info as well. I've been looking around to see what I can find. I'm just trying to start with a truck that doesn't have a payment and then when I get some money get a better truck. Or, I have a chance to go with Werner. These are my two choices. I'd really like to try and work for myself if at all possible.

Defiantely find the O/O section here and read up. Ask questions.

You need enough money to run for 3 months without a check. Insurance isn't cheap for a newbie.

A friend is leased to Landstar. You don't have the experience to go there. His truck is a '96 Mack. Paid for it in 7 months. He tells me he made more money as a company driver. Especially when he worked for JB Hunt believe it or not! $50K+ on dedicated.

I am selling some land and my GF's son asked me if I was going to buy a rig..........not now! I might have driven in the past, never did OTR.

Usually if a truck sits 2 months or so you will have leaky wheel seals.

You can get 2 million miles out of a Cat. My friend has 1.5+ million on his Mack. The tranny popped out of gear on him a year or two ago with a heavy load on a long steep grade. Rebuild may be coming someday on the tranny.

Wow. A lot of reading. I haven't quite got to 36 yet but I don't want my own authority yet. I'd just like to lease on. Or, like I said Werner is another option. I could always sell the truck if I needed to.

Most compnaies you lease to pay squat. .88-.92 cents a mile.

Finish school talk to the O/O's here.

Landstar will sign on anything with a sleeper and three axles and 10 tires. Bennet Truck Transport will too, but they're pretty special and you'll either be pulling 2 or 3 tractors with it, mobile homes, or flat beds with vehicles on them. and they require 2 years "equipment hauling experience".

I can show the experience. I have someone who owns there own trucking company that will help with that. I've driven his truck and 48 foot flatbed. Also, I've pulled a 18 foot bumper pull and a 28 foot gooseneck flat bed trailer with cars and equipment on it as well. I'd like to lease on with a company that keeps me somewhat busy but that also doesn't force me to take crappy loads. Of the two that you listed above which would you say was better? I've had someone say to lease on with Landstar but I'm open to any/every ones opinion.

    Thanks

I wouldn't suggest lieing to Landstar. I was talking with my friend today. Your truck may be too old. I think they have tightened the requirements. Call them. Don't rely on info here.

Very few make the grade to be a Landstar contractor.

Thats funny Rug, because i contacted them just out of total curiosity and they told me it had to have a dot approved sleeper and tandem drive axles. Didnt mention NOTHING else. But I'll believe you, because theres always some kind of hidden requirements. Maybe if he waxes it first and polishes his fuel tanks! heh!

But i have to say...there are lots of trucks OLDER than that one on the road. There are a lot of companies, such as Schneider and JB, who have strict age requirements, but will lift the requirements and let in ANY truck, as long as it LOOKS goood and passes DOT. you could lease on a 76 Pete 379 with JB as long as it looks good. Just polish the tanks and wax the roof i suppose.

I am not suggesting those companies at all, and you will find tons of complaints about them, so do your own shopping.
