Starting food service career at 40??

My first guess is no because you don’t see old guys doing food service too much manual labor.

 

Someone's gonna hop on here and say "at my outfit we got guys in their 40s and 50s putting in work everyday." But guys who are able to last that long have alot of seniority, so they're bidding on easier runs. Their bodies have become accustomed to the work and they go to the same customers and locations everyday. And there's a good probability they're working through some sort of chronic pain.

Starting out in your 40's? That might be a tougher road to hoe. You're gonna be getting all the crap runs, swing shifts, etc that guys 20 years younger are doing.

If you're in decent shape, try it. But I'd be looking into LTL where there's less wear and tear on your body and the hours and money are alot better.

 

Do a line haul or tanker job.
When you get older you want to be relatively healthy in mobility and not struggle to get off the couch to get a cup of coffee. This would be due to joint health which can deteriorate.

 

I did food service in my 40s wasn’t a big deal of course it’s going to depend what kind of shape you’re in since you’ve done it b4 I’m sure you already know the answer to your questions.Starting new and running extra runs would be a pain but now days you would most likely get in to a bid run pretty quickly I would think.

 

Same here; did it in my 40's. Was already in good shape due to hitting the gym 3 or 4 times weekly and running quite a bit on weekends. Not something to make a career of though.

 

I worked for MBM in Salisbury NC for 8 years mostly Hardee’s just tailgating them.Checkers we handtrucked inside only 4 day work week made over70 about 15 years ago

 

You are right not a job you can retire from unless you moved into a shuttle run.The management where I worked we’re up front and told guys to save money because you won’t be able to do it later in life

 

I did food service until age 52 and only stopped for other reasons, not body, health etc. Was in better shape then than now. If you're in decent shape I would not rule it out.
