starter isnt getting enough amps. this will get worse as it gets colder. Thats why your motor cranks worse the more you try. if you can't test your batteries on your own. pull em and get yourself to a parts store that can. Try to spend the extra bucks on a battery with higher rating of cold cranking amps

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Those wires can look fine on the outside and be all green and crusty on the inside.

Sometimes on the Delco’s the big solenoid on the top of them will arch the contacts inside and burn a portion of them away. Was not uncommon to have to take the solenoid apart and clean, file, or grind/buff the contacts. Sometimes rotate them to a new side to work. They would cause starter motor to crank slow and then “lock up” as the bad contacts got hot. They would then stick until tapped with hammer to reset. That is why Delco began to recommend installing the extra “ford” type remote solenoid sometime in the 80’s.

Also the power bar that's held on to the power terminal on starter and up to the sel. is held on with torks head small bolts that l have found to be louse and causes many starters to be changed out with the new style small ones?

Thanks guys I ended up push starting the truck and now it’s fine so far. I’m still going to change the starter and a couple other parts to be on the safe side.

Now that it's running. Good time to check the charging system before shutting down.

That’s what I’m thinking because the starter might not be strong enough to turn the fly wheel quick enough for the engine to turn properly.

If the alternator isn't charging the batteries fully.
    The starter will struggle.

If the batteries aren't functioning properly. The starter will struggle.

If the battery cables are even the slightest loose. Or some corrosion. The starter will struggle.

Did anyone mention the starter yet?

    Moephilly1 Thanks this.
