Penske has a bunch of them speced like that. Registered for 65,000 and short wheelbase. A lot of company’s use them down here. They can pull ‘53’s into very tight places. I know at least one company runs them daily between Houston and San Antonio.

From Meritors 2022 wish list.

I don’t see the benefits. It’s a lot of added weight for nothing. Texas only gives 20,000 on a single axle.
-
That’s a double reduction yard tractor axle. It’s not a highway axle. And none were 38.
-
Texas has many exceptions for intrastate. We run 33,000 on single axle straight trucks registered for 53,500. 54,000 and above requires tandem straights or a combo T-T.
-
The RS 30 185 is not double reduction and most manufactures rate them on their chassis at 38,000. It is recommended for yard tractors. However you can spec any truck just about anyway you want. Single axle fire trucks and refuse trucks use tons of RS 30 185.
-
Maybe so. But that Volvo is a tandem RT40-145. Also it has 275/80 22.5 tires. Which 4 of them if it was a single would not be rated to carry 38-40,000 pounds. Doesn’t matter what exemption Texas offers they still won’t let you exceed equipment rating. I think you are just arguing to argue.
-
Not arguing. We have 38,000 single axles with 13,500 steer axles. 16 ply 11r 22.5’s. Load them at 33,000. Axles split and balance out nicely. Truck weighs 13000 empty. 46,000 gross on 53,500 registration They are never axle overloaded since we went this way. That is not exceeding equipment rating. 53,500 gives a little bit more leeway if a pintle trailer is pulled from time to time.
-
You’re getting off in the weeds. None of this has anything to do with the op’s truck. His truck isn’t set up this way. But out of curiosity, what is it that you do with this truck? I only ask because my BS meter is going off. Even with OS permits Texas isn’t that liberal with axle weights. Also can you provide a picture of said truck?
-
And I’ve also never seen a 16 ply 11r22.5 capable of carrying 8800 pounds. Even an 18ply isn’t rated for that.
