Tire chains type to carry on the truck?

You get what you pay for..there are cheaper chains.
The V-bar chains tend to last longer and obviously bite better. I never used bungie cords, just take the time to tighten chains properly. Ice road I ran was about 6 hour round trip so always carried assortment of quick links etc to make repairs as needed.

 

Pewag or trygg are the best. They’ll last plenty long enough and won’t let you down when you need them.

Just be careful of using them, in some states, running those on pavement is prohibited because it can tear up the asphalt

 

They’re only illegal if you get caught. And the states that check only care if you have chains on, they don’t stop you and look at them.

 

Not that we'd break the law or anything like that but if I knew I was going to be on compact snow and ice that's what I'd have on. For a drag chain on glare ice they work better than anything. They'll wear down fast on plain pavement . The only time I've had any pushback was from a very young CHP lady cop and her training officer finally told her to settle down. All he said to me was to keep those things off the dry pavement.
They're also good in mud, especially if it's one of those decomposed granite surface slops with clay underneath.
I have a set for my F250 and they do real well on that. I keep some weight in the back and between the weight and those chains I haven't had to yell for help yet.

 

I would just go for something cheap to start with. I don't think they will get used much, especially if this is just a "test". Put them on tight and stay 25mph and they will last a while. You can take a page from the LTL book and run 55 with them but they won't last long at all doing that, you almost throw them away for that trip or two.

 

People actually run 55 with chains on? Where?
