He’s probably running “out and backs” and came home empty a lot to get his next load. It’s hard to maintain being loaded both ways, and being home every night unless you have a support truck running. Well you can’t have a support truck running if your only running one truck that’s on the money so to speak.
Running a small radius is saving a lot of insurance at least.

@OP I’m glad your doing well. Your numbers look exactly like I’d expect them too. I could probably guess the city you’re based out of.
Your timing was perfect but do remember it would be hard to be successful if rates hit a bad patch and especially if there was a standard 2 year downturn plus maybe an engine overhaul on top of your normal maintenance.
Right now your likely getting near round trip price of “normal times”. This is allowing you so much DH. When a load was paying $450 thats now paying 800 to $1000 then your going to be in trouble if it goes back to even $500
Keep up the great work though, these points are just food for thought. Save, save, save!ProfessionalNoticer, Another Canadian driver, Vampire and 5 others Thank this. -
If you have a steady outbound load that you can do everyday and still coming back empty for 3.50 or better on ALL miles it's worth it. 1250-1500 a day with 50% empty miles is nothing to squak at. No surprise headaches, get empty and head back to reload.
We try and keep 1 truck on something steady like that and the other truck put rounds together loaded both waysAnother Canadian driver, Vampire, Beaver9 and 3 others Thank this. -
When I started in 2020 I made about $1.55 on all miles, whereas 2021 came out at $2.37, so I definitely felt a bit of “just squeaking by” when I was new.
Either way though, I know things go up and down a lot and stuff can get ugly quick. I am a big saver and won’t feel ok until I have at least $100k saved up. And even then I won’t stop saving!Vampire, Another Canadian driver, larry2903 and 3 others Thank this. -
But with paper logs a lot is possible too.
I am using e-logs. And these keep me grounded. Not possible to come early every day.Last edited: Feb 5, 2022

I don't know if we will know the rate the OP is running for.
I need to prepare taxes for next month, so I want to see how much was spent on parts and maintenance last year and maybe I will compare my numbers once I prepare the data.Last edited: Feb 5, 2022

I understand now. I have OTR tunnel vision. Doing it so long it's about all I know and all I do. Just run the DAT Load Board all over the country. I don't limit myself to anywhere in the country (other than Florida of course) and I am out for 3 weeks, back home for one. I didn't even think about the out and backs.
