You'll get a list as varied as the number of units out there. Seems everyone has their favorites. Me.... I'm no help...
-
I have no favorites but I do know of a few Thermo-King units that have been trouble free for years.

i like the pony pack (even though i dont have one)
300 lbs, self contained and you can get most of the parts from any napa? yup im there -
If you're primarily going to be at shows, you may want to look at something that has a shore power provision so you don't have to run the APU/generator at all. That could also be added after the fact; just a power connection and the circuitry to prevent a battery/alternator overload. Any competent RV shop could do that for you. Of course, you would probably require an electric (RV-style) heating/air conditioning unit.
Going the generator + heater + air conditioner route might work better for you (and be cheaper, or at least no more expensive, as well). -
Get a generator, not a all in one. Double Eagel Sleepers makes and installs one of the best.

Thats what we have. very good generator for the price.

I've been reading through some of the posts on here about idling laws and APU's.
My question is this, does an APU keep the motor warm as well? Is it somehow powering the block heater?
I get that they are used to keep the cab warm but if they don't heat the block how can they expect the truck to start if you're sitting for a day or two in sub-zero weather? -
Not sure if they are all the same but the ones we use are tied into the cooling system which helps keep the motor warm. If it hits -20 I plug the block heater into the power outlet from the APU.
-
Well, not sure exactly where to put this question so I'll just ask here.
I should be starting driving school soon at a local community college. I am researching trucking companies right now.
If I was to get lucky enough to get on with a company that has APU's on the trucks, will the APU have an inverter built in so I can use a fridge and/or microwave, etc?
Thanks....
