    Hey all,

Sorry, I'm not a trucker but I believe this is the best place to get some advice. I live in Toronto but, I need to move temporarily to California in March for work purposes. I have been driving for 10 years and I have Hyundai Sonata 2010 in good condition. But after getting a good service for the car, I'm hoping to drive during the day and stay in Hotels/Motels along the Interstate each night. The reason for choosing to take the car is that I can take more luggage and I don't have to sell it here for a lower price and then just after a few weeks buy another car by probably paying more money.

But saying all this, I have never really driven longer than 6-7 hours in a 24 hour period and have no idea what the weather conditions along the I-94 W and I-80 W will be like in March. I am planning to use Garmin Satnav and google maps. So basically, I want to get your advice on the below:
    1. Is this road trip even doable, or is it not worth it?
    2. If doable, do you have any tips, suggestions, or safety concerns for first-time drivers?

    Thank you in advance,
    GK

Can get really nasty this time of year in Montana and west. Lots of snow. Should be fine use your head, download a good weather app and the state highway condition map app for the states your travelling through. Most also have traffic cams that you can also check in real time.

Cross the boarder there rather then Crossing through SSM & Thunder Bay. You’ll get much better highways. You’d probably avoid a lot of bad weather that way.

    North or south California?
If Los Angeles I’d cut down to St Louis then I-44 to I-40.
On average, better weather that way.
If San Francisco, I-80 is about it. Can be severe weather though, being you’re from Canada it’s nothing you haven’t seen before.

From Toronto, cross at Salina/Port Huron and drop down south immediately, all the way to I10 if you are going that far south in California. Basically the further south you get before heading west the better. Also give yourself plenty of time. Don't plan on hotel stays, because you might get tired before you get there and driving tired is very dangerous. Don't be afraid to stop at a rest area and walk around for a few minutes to get blood flow. If it starts getting dark and you get tired, don't keep up pushing yourself. Get a hotel and a good night sleep.

Keep on eye out for tornado weather in the South this time of year.

Driving gets boring so when your mind is losing focus, just find a rest area, get out and walk around for 5 or 10 minutes. Keep the mind fresh and the blood moving. In summer I take a jump rope with me and do that for a couple minutes when I stop.

March storms usually don't last long, but can be the most dramatic in my experience.

I would suggest allowing an extra day or two so that you can sit tight if it gets real crappy. It probably won't last long.

I personally don't go to Cali. But what I hear from other drivers that run from Cali to GTA they take I40 over I70. Nasty weather can occur there.
Don't go south on I75 till you hit I10. That's waaaay too much of a detour.
