Been owner operator for five years. I pay drivers 30 percent off the gross before any deductions. My question is am leased on to a company with 18/82 split. I pay drivers 30 percent before the 18percent so if load pays 700 I get 574 so basically drivers get 30 percent off the 700. Is this what every one else does. Trying to be fair but sometimes driver makes more than me

I would think. But maybe it should be 30% of the 88%? I’m not positive - then they would probably just be a driver for your carrier. The bigger issue is you having drivers and also giving up 18% to your carrier. I could never commit to that, the profit margin would be so small or none at all it seems. Have you considered getting your authority?

This is a "loaded" question. Is there a difference between paying 30% of gross or 25% of after gross ? As the owner of the co, what else do you handle for the O/O's ? Trailer rental, plates, fuel cards, dispatching ? Co's can manipulate figures soooo good.

Once you subtract your operating costs the driver should get the larger portion and you get the smaller one.
your driver is the most important portion of the operation, not you.Beaver9, Terlingua and Wasted Thyme Thank this. -

My 2 cents ... You get what you pay for. You want quality divers who you can depend on, you want a higher retention rate ... pay your people... The driver does the heavy lifting for that truck, not you. Hell if you are operating under someone else's authority then even your risk as a truck owner is reduced... if it was your authority and your insurance then maybe you could rethink the pay schedule.

I used to get 42% after there standard 36/65. And after fuel and tolls.
