It seems as though owner operators go for Cummins over Paccar. New Kenworths and Peterbilts have mostly Paccar engines now. Are Paccar engines that more expensive to maintain compared to Cummins?
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Paccar for owner operators?

If you’re looking at a Paccar from 2016 on or so you will have way better luck than the earlier ones. They’ve changed the egr and fuel system, basically the new ones share a block with the early ones and that’s about it.
Mine is 510/1850 and I’ve been pretty happy with it. I’ve had to replace a few sensors, the exhaust manifold, and water pump. The exhaust manifold is a 3 piece and the gaskets at the slip joints will start leaking. You can just replace the gaskets but you’re already pulling the egr off anyway so I felt it made more sense to just replace the manifold at that point. I’m at just over 463k on mine now.
The hardest part for me was learning to drive it at a lower rpm. The torque curve is between 1000-1400 rpm or so. I try and stay between 11 and 1400 as much as I can. I have lo 22’s and 3.36 rears so I do end up around 1500 or a little over if I have to be in a hurry.
I think it’s a crap shoot with any of these new engines. You can get a good one or a bad one from anyone. I know guys who are happy with the X15 and I know guys like my brother who had to delete them to get them to run right. And I know guys like me who have had good luck with the MX13 and I know guys who’ve gotten bad ones. A friend of mine ordered 5 389’s last year all spec’d the same with MX13’s and 4 run great and one is in and out of the shop.
I’m in the boat right now of deciding what I want to do next year and I’m really thinking about a Freightlinet 122SD with a Detroit. The Detroit seems to be the most trouble free of the new engines anymore.TruckingSam, bzinger, Edjahman and 6 others Thank this. -

I’m on my 3rd MX and have no real complaints
2014 KW and 2019 Peterbilt and low a 2021 Peterbilt all with 510hp
My ‘14 ran fine but was going through sensors until KW in Ogden Utah had it in
They were the first shop to recommend flushing the egr cooler
They said they have guys who every year just flush the cooler and burn the def filter and those guys never have issuesLast edited: Mar 5, 2021

My MX13 EPA 13 is at 600K and if you pay attention to it and do the maintenance, it's fie.
I'm probably one of the few people who actually like it.
I've owned ISX and X15 and I swore I'd never own a Cummins again.
It's just my experience. You have to read up on different systems and learn how they work and maintain them.
I'm sure it's the same for any engine.
You have to care and not just run run run it.spsauerland and jason6541 Thank this. -
