It's been done - I've hauled barley coal (almost a powder), and I know Pharm's hauled lump coal. It's definitely not something I'd want to haul, it leaves a nice black shadow in the trailer that usually needs a wash, but I guess a load is a load when you need it.
The worst thing I've had to haul was cotton seed, and it was fresh. It took 4 of us over 3 hours to fight that stuff outta the trailer. And that was with a guy on a rope in the hopper (pit grate was open - so no falling!). That stuff was like trying to pour cotton balls through a funnel!

whats the benefits to having a hopper over an end dump?
-
A hopper unloads from the bottom withoutthe need for hydraulics or overhead clearance and they are much lighter than a dump
hoppers are mostly used for grain, and product produced from grain though many other free flowing dry commodities are hauled in them ie
Fertilizer
Meal (meat&bone, blood, cookie,
Broken Glass
Onions
Salt
Coal
Sand
and probably about a hundred other things I cant think of lol -
wheathauler,have you been to Cat,yet?
-
I see alot of end dumps around here, not too many hoppers. I wouldnt mind pulling an end dump.

I needed to get it done this month and just decided to do it today. My trailer isn't due till august but I'm going to have to get some new tires for it to pass.

Got our IFTA decals today, the paperwork says it was issued Jan 5, still took over a week to mail it here! -
Yes, like a ultraviolet light. Timpte in Wichita uses them when doing DOT inspections too. I guess it shows the cracks fairly well. They were even using it on the frame. Thats probably the best DOT inspection I've ever seen... I was getting a little worried.
