    UPS vs XPO

The reason for this post is to gain insights on why several top-scale (highest pay) overnight XPO line-haul drivers have recently submitted their notice and going to work for UPS as overnight line-haul drivers.

To better understand what pay looks like at XPO, I will detail our pay. Our pay (top-scale) is $0.72 per mile and $31 per hour - I drive 515 miles per shift and work about 4-hours on the dock adding up to approximately $510 daily (usually 14-hours) and $120,000 annually.

I have no idea what UPS is offering, but I cannot image it is much better than our pay. Given that it is a unionized location (XPO is not), my assumption is that they will not start at top pay and be required work a few years to get to it.

Please share any knowledge of what current starting pay is for experienced drivers with all endorsements is at UPS. Also feel free is share anything that would make the grass greener at UPS…. I may also be interested but will not “jump ship” without doing my homework. I have found that this forum is a great resource for getting the honest truth.

The pay probably is running in the same neighborhood, benefits are paid for at UPS, your retirement and insurance. Also, I suspect that UPS being union, job security is much more secure at UPS. I will mention one important item, SENIORITY RULES AT UPS, I no idea how XPO operates.

If they're going to UPS parcel, they're going to make out alot better then xpo. Insurance is paid for and they still have a pension, plus the pay is tops in the trucking industry.

@LtlAnonymous works there. On another thread he mentioned he made around $110k last year and I guarantee he worked far fewer hours to get it. I think they are up around $40 per hour now, but the pay progression used to take 4 years to get there. Not sure how it is these days with so many carriers hiring at top scale. It might be more competitive now for new hires.

If you can handle the pay progression (if it's still as brutal as it used to be), it's a no-brainer for the long term. You might make a little less money, but you'll never have to get up on that dock and you won't have to work 14 hours a day to get big money.

Who the heck wants to work 14 hours a day? That maybe the issue with jumping ship too.

XPO vs anywhere else…Who the hell wants to drive over 500 miles and then work the dock for 4 hours in the middle of it? Even FedEx Freight would be better than that.

Yeah, I think we're somewhere around $41 an hour right now, and we get a $1 raise this summer. It's good.

That was one thing I had to realize. Yeah I may have been making $90k a year at ABF, but I worked like a dog. Here, I show up, I do my 8-10 hours with the occasional 12, and beautiful checks show up in my account. No complaints.

But yes. The progression and the early part of this job are...a bit much. I know several people who didn't make it.

You don't work all week, and now you're working at 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning going out into a snowstorm. Oh, and it's one of the longest runs at your terminal. Enjoy! Lol

And I don't mean to laugh, because it's absolutely awful. But we all did it, we all paid our dues, and oh my God does it pay off.

You just have to have the right mindset. Think long-term.

And that's quite good money, but #### are you working to earn it. Is that based on 5 or 6 days of work?

I know you XPO guys make pretty good money, since we have someone at our terminal that came over from there. He was making around $120k like you.

He was completely dumbfounded by the cut in pay he took the first three years, but he stuck in there, and now he's running teams. He makes a lot more money than I do. He earns it, but he's making really great money.

A lot of the opportunities you will see at UPS are for teams these days. Those guys... I'm telling you. They make absolute bank.

    Speaking of which. @Banker

My son went thru the ordeal of the first few years at UPS, now he is so glad he endured it. He has enough seniority that he can actually pass on the "crap". 5 days a week, home daily, weekends off, benefits that cannot be beat.
