They are for what we call ESL or Extended Service Lanes - they are service oriented runs that are too far for one driver to drive out and back on 11 hours. An example is our Buffalo, NY terminal runs Columbus, Oh this way since it opens up some extremely long next day service lanes. Another is the Harrisburg area terminals running Lordstown, Oh which opens up next day service as far away as South Bend, In who also ESL's into Lordstown but with triples. For the terminals that have them, it's a bid based off seniority like any other. I've run it for a week before and it's pretty nice - since you only drive half of the trip it pays something like .70 or .72 per mile plus all of your hourly pay for drop/hook, fuel, and dock. It's a nice way to make around $250 per night while only working about 7 hours and sleeping on the job for about 5 or 6 hours - which is what you're supposed to do..lol..

I guess to answer your question though it's just a bid based off seniority that certain terminals have. From what I've seen, there are some pretty senior drivers here that will always bid it, some drivers bid it for an easy year, and some drivers get forced into it because their seniority won't hold anything else. Just me, but if I'm gonna be gone for 13 hours per night which they are and I am now with the 70 hour log, I'd rather do the entire job and make $380 per night on 13 hours than sleep for 6 of the 13 and make $250..
