AS in what? medical or truck/cargo?
pinballwizard Thanks this. -
i'm sorry...guess this was a little open-ended question.. medical. which is the smarter choice, buying from a "self-insured" company or going with a private carrier?

The question you have to ask is what is the policy you will be offered by the company like an HMO or PPO. A PPO is not as good as an HMO as you most likely don't live in the area of the carrier.
Then you need to look at the cost you will be charged by the company. Does it have everything YOU need in the policy from the deductible to dental, vision and Hearing and is there a Life policy attached.
Then you need to look at several insurance policies on your own. How much a month and at what deductible you can afford. If it's about the same as the expenses you pay to the company and you might get better coverage buying your own then you have your answer.
Also if you spend a certain amount for health insurance out of your OWN pocket you can deduct it at tax time but you can NOT deduct the costs if the premiums come out of your pay check.(I know some of the CPA's ON site will have an answer to this as I'n not 100% sure)
You'll be smart to compare the total that you pay for each policy and determine what suits your needs. Insurance is a hard and complicated animal to understand and with changes happening at the federal level with Obamacare you will need to be extra careful!pinballwizard Thanks this. -
Thanks for your insight. I was just wondering if the companies that 'self' insure are in line with those that go thru a private carrier or is this another way for a newbie to get screwed

Usually the "self insured" thing is on the equipment. I said Usually but not always but you have to be certain they are actually paying into the policy. Remember Arrow! They didn't pay in and there were a few other companies listed as not paying the medical also in the bad company thread.
I'd pay my own just to be safe these days with these bottom feeder companies!pinballwizard Thanks this.
