I think there was a pretty lively discussion on this subject over in the garage section a few months ago, 3406B mechanical vs. 3406E electronic or something like that. In fact, I just found it:

    http://www.thetruckersreport.com/tr...-mechanical-or-electronic-cat-one-better.html

In my opinion its hard to beat an electronic engine for miles per gallon. A computer is just better at sensing exactly how much fuel the engine needs than a driver can by "feel". Only downside for an electronic engine is occasionally they will have a sensor or wire go bad and cause problems, but for me the benefits outweigh the negatives.

I'd really prefer a new truck with a pre-2003 engine in it, but thanks to the EPA, those days are probably gone forever.

Under the I guess I'll never see it all category-Today right at noon I'm goin south on 63 coming into Bono. There's a driver throwing a u all the way across 63 about 100 yds north of the light. Had traffic stopped both ways of course. He was pulling a 53 ft. van. I couldn't believe it.

wheathauler, ive been trying to put some realistic numbers together on hauling grain in and out of wichita area. Whats the rate per mile running these days, when i sold my truck in 2002 i was getting about 1.35 per mile plus a 10 percent surcharge. Im trying to figure what my break even point would be. Do you guys also know what the current lease rates are if your pulling there hopper and running there authority? I know what it takes to make this happen but the numbers arent looking so hott.

I have enough for some down money for a truck but cant afford a trailer yet. I just wonder am i crazy for wanting to do this in this economy? Trucks are so cheap rite now will this hold out for along time or will truck market come back soon. I guess i nead some realistic numbers please any help would be appreciated. The other thing is ive been at current company as a driver for 8 years home every night, everyother weekend off, and made almost 55,000 in 2009. Would it be foolish to give that up? thanks guys im just burnt out on the corporate bs of a big company. I nead a change but dont want to self destruct.

I'd keep saving money and stay put at least till summer. What is a good down payment on a nice used truck anyway?

Wish I could find a good used truck for 10k, I'm halfway there just from lack of stuff to spend it on. Well, lack of will to spend it on anything. I figure another 5k at least just for start up running money, not including equipment costs. Or authority, plates, taxes, more taxes, even more taxes.
