How do you thaw a frozen deck post?

im not a car hauler but a flatbedder. i used to carry a small bag of road salt to put on the deck when it was icey and something needed tarped.

 

Buy a fresh jug of antifreeze, and cut a slit in the foil. That will let you squirt the fluid onto the inner post so it runs into sleeve and thaws things out.

I'd normally put a half pint or so in, then preload it up, and hit the bottom with heat. Usually free in a couple minutes.

 

Maybe a can of windshield de-icer ?

 

If the back top deck on a highrail when empty sticks going down, I bet you still have debris in the post. Spray PB blaster in the posts and let sit for a while and then flush the posts until water comes out freely.

 

Airline antifreeze will get rid of ice inside the post in seconds. Or hit it with a torch.

 

I had this happen the other day in Iowa. Went to the truck wash and had then keep spraying until it freed itself up.

Unfortunately I'm finding many surprises from the previous driver.

Pickup a jug of methyl Hydrate at a hardware store in the paint section. Dribble some in the top and wait for 3 or 5 min. It is the main ingredient in airline antifreeze and it has no seal protectant mixed in and will cut ice in seconds. It is the antifreeze portion in windshield washer fluid.

 

It happened again the other day in Detroit.

I dumped an entire quart of air line anti freeze down the deck post. That didn't work.
A Cassans driver gave me a new can of something that resembled PB Blaster, still no go. I dumped half a gallon of windshield washer down that dang thing. Then, after all that, it finally started to free itself up. Once I got it low enough to drive a 4x4 truck on, it was game on. Eventually it broke free.

I hate winter..
