I just have a quick question..and I know that this question may not be able to be answered because each terminal is different.. but I just wanted to know generally how long would I have to work the dock for OD before I am eligible for their driving school program.. all answers are helpful

I know several years ago one of our dock workers got frustrated with the amount of time it was going to take him to train to be a driver at Dayton Freight so he quit to go to Old Dominion and it didn't take long at all. He was in line waiting at our place but he got right into their program. I don't know if this is typical or if it's just because our terminal is not a hub and the OD terminal is a massive hub in our city. In other words, there are hundreds of employees there instead of dozens like at my terminal. The sheer size difference between the terminals might have had something to do with it.

But as you said, each terminal is different. I can almost guarantee an end of line terminal would probably be similar to mine where there is a waiting list.

I went through the dock to driver program myself. It took me about 3 months from my first day to be approved to be a solo driver. I worked the dock for about a month waiting for the driver training class (There is a class at least once a month, in our region at least) After the week long class, you get set up with a P&D driver for at least 3 weeks, then a line haul driver for another 2. After that, you get scheduled to take a road test with a safety manager and if approved, will take another week or two to be approved by corporate.
