My question is this " How are all you owner operaters doing? With all the Doom and Gloom that I have seen posted here, it would seem like there is ample opportunity for an Individual such as myself to buy a truck and make a killing. Because there are folks here here who say " Do not buy a truck! It's not worth it. But yet I see A whole bunch of trucks on the road. WHATS THE CATCH? Swift, Shnideer, JB Hunt is not payiny their O/O $1.50 a mile. How are they doing it?

You can make it. Most drivers don't handle it like a business. If you do you will do alright. But you will just make a living, don't plan on getting rich.

As for most of the posters on here, imo, are newbies or wannabes who have never seen the inside of a truck. Not mentioning any names, I think some of these guys don't have a life, and just post smart### remarks on every thread.
    Good luck to you.

Everybody is entitled to their own viewpoint. But I have honestly been crunching numbers of everything more than I care to admit. But the numbers aren't coming back on the positive side at all.

All it takes are a couple of ill timed mechanical issues back to back if you are driving a truck that is out of warranty & you have a combined $10k bill staring back at you. Get the paperwork on a truck that has been ran for awhile, it is much more than pm's & inframes to worry about.

the VAST majority of people out here are running untill there next major breakdown. then it's over. Nobody has any reserves left. I've been putting back more then I can really afford to for repairs and i'm still burning through that. I'm up to $1000 in repairs this week and I just found the seal on my power divider leaking last night.
January has been horrible so far

I've only been at it for 5 months and it's been a struggle but I'm keeping the lights on, food on the table, and no debt. Just put new brakes and drums on and mechanically my truck is very sound now. I do need to fix the A/C but that can wait til march. Saving money for a clutch is the next thing. I should do pretty good this year as long as nothing major breaks.

making it in the trucking business is a tough question. ive made it well. can you ? sure you can. but will you ? every one wants to know how the other guy did it? but most will not want to follow the exact same steps as the other guy who made it. also even if you do, some other drivers way of trucking may not apply to you. i bought a 95' intl cabover with 400,000 mi for $15,000 cash in 99' & was told by all except one of my trucking buddies that i should of bought a k.w. pete. e.t.c. yes i was laughed at a lot. going on 9 years & over a mil miles... i need not say who is having the last laugh. but still to this day all the other drivers would rather drive a new chromed out pete & work for a co, then to be seen driving an ole dependable inexpensive truck. champagne taste on a beer budjet is what drives so many o/o's into bankruptcy. do you want to make money & have peace of mind ,or look good ? if your embarrased at the thought of going down the road in anything less than a shiny pete or k.w. or feel the need to spend a lot of money on a truck, then stick to a co job . i.m.o.
