Using new equipment can be a very wise strategy, but with the current market situation you need to order them almost a year in advance. That may not line up perfectly with the speed in which you are able to grow your business. And if that occurs, it may be smart to be open to the idea of buying used trucks too. Wise business leaders are not so stubborn that they become unable to adapt to reality. Assuming you consider your business an investment tool, of course... Some people think there is pride in being stubborn, but the matter of fact is that it is oftentimes a sign of attempting to cover insecurity.

So of course, buy new trucks if you can afford it. There is nothing wrong with being premium, on the contrary! I am just saying that if your new trucks means that you need to get financing, and if that financing is costly and/or requires that you get costly insurance, it will inevitably eat into your profit margin, which is something to seriously consider. Not a firm no, but something that I think many owners overlook. Trucking is not a 100% safe business anyway, and thinking that getting all kinds of insurance could ever make it safe would not be wise. Even a new truck with all kinds of extra insurance can crash, causing a loss of time, cargo, and staff. Risk needs to be managed wisely.

I did not in any way encourage the purchase of equipment that is so bad that it would not be recognized by brokers. Normally I only buy used trucks from a specific supplier which shows me maintenance documentation, and with less than 450 000 miles (but currently the market is very different).

It is unclear what your point is. If you believe I am missing some insight, why dont you add it to the forum?

I dont know how progressive works, but it's not so much an insurance company difference, as it is an agent difference. I have Great West and I can make my own certificates instantly through my agents web portal.

I've actually had a few brokers' packet say it had to come straight from Progressive. But when I asked them, they said they didn't actually care where it came from. I never did have a problem. FYI, it was an agent that explained how to make my own certs, so if you can figure it out based on my crappy instructions, they will be able to help for sure.

Whoa, really? Great West specifically told me I couldn't make my own certs. How do you get to that portal?

Edit: I guess I need to learn how to read, lol. Maybe it's my agent that doesn't allow it.

I send it to broker, have agent send it if requested, other times they pull from RMIS.
