There are quite a few stations over closer to Amish country around here that have undyed Kerosene pumps. They use a lot of it in their lamps, heaters and farm equipment. Occasionally I'll fill my 7.3 with it if it's going to be sitting for extended periods in the winter.

I never thought about it for bunk heaters but that's a good idea.

glow pins rarely ever go out. you should probably have a extra one because they are some what easy to break the ceramic or the wires off when installing or removing but if you are careful your probably never need to replace a glowpin (i never have) big thing that causes smoking is the combustion air hole under the glow plug gets plugged up with carbon. if it hasn't been serviced regularly the burner chamber will probably need to be removed and all the buildup cleaned out this will require new gaskets, they will fall apart when you take it apart. i do this every other year on mine. the other every other years i just clean the combustion air hole put a new atomizer screen it. this has kept my my heaters running perfectly.

another thing that helps is to try not to ever let them run on there lowest speed or cycle on and off. in warmer weather where you still need a little heat but its running on it lowest speed or shutting all the way down to maintain temperature, i will crack open the windows or a vent not only will it help it regulate the temperature better but running at higher heat output reduces the amount of carbon buildup and will keep it running properly for a longer period of time.

And you should put the screen in so the seem is on the opposite side of the air hole that you carefully clean.
