I have always serviced my own truck. it would be good to do yours a few times, just so that you know where everything is & can inspect all kinds of things while your crawling around under the truck. a lot of the T.A's or Petro's will miss half the grease fitting if you dont point out where the one's are that they dont see.

You would be dollars ahead if you got your oil from a local supplier instead of buying at truck stops, Wally World, etc. I get a synthetic blend (40% synthetic) from a local supplier for around $9 a gallon in a 55 drum delivered to my house for a whopping $5. Whether you change all the time or go with a bypass, no need to spend more than you have to for oil and filters.

Each engine is different. Even within the same brand and model. Only Used Oil Analysis will really tell you how your oil is doing along with anything that is going on internally with the engine. Why throw oil away at 10K miles if it is showing it will go further? I did 30K oil changes on a previous N-14 using Kendall oil and Baldwin filters. I got out of it at 1.5 million miles and it never had more than a head gasket and a couple of injectors in that time. It still got almost 7 mpg and used only 1 gallon of oil in about 8K miles. But that was that particular engine. For another, I would test the oil and see where the changes should be. We had other N-14's in the same operation that fell apart sooner with those same oil change intervals. The ISX I have now, just seems to like oil changes at around 20K miles.

For what it's worth we used buy it in drums but found out it was almost $1 cheaper per gallon if you buy it in bulk. Just pump it into a fuel oil tank or one of those plastic totes in the metal cages.

I think I'll change oil next week, when its almost at 10,000 i'll get sample again and see where im at.

The fleet was running synthetic, but went to to petro based at last change. Y? prob cheaper and new they were going to put it up 4 sale.

    Thanks 4 all the help.

Now heres a really stupid question. What is the oil capacity on a detroit 12.7? I drove a 11 before and a 14ltr but never a 12.7. Am gonna change oil myself and just want to buy enough before I start draining.

    Thanks in advance
