My first truck had a BC1 290 and a 4+4. Got the job done, just had to rebuild the shift knobs every time you changed the oil.

I melted down 2 main box's because of exactly what you said .. I learned when I smoked the 2nd main box to get my foot out of it quicker on a grade other wise there was gonna be a cook out
I put coolers on when I put the 2nd main box in ...lol .. And that's a big concern of mine right now.. when I pulled them.out of the other truck I seriously thought about just ponying up the $$ and buying a 18 speed .. but my stubbornness over rode my common sense..
    That's that #### Irish curse

    Hah!

With that 318 my motto became "shift early and shift often".

Any of those Yamahas you had to drive like a small-block Chev. When the valves floated it wanted a gear, and the redline on the tach was your downshift point. My cousin had a bunch of 8V-92’s. Even those his guys ran above 1900, he had them racked out to 2300 and they’d cruise at 1900, but first moan out of them they got a shift.

They all were back then. Park a new one beside anything built in the ‘70’s and it’s soon apparent the new one isn’t much of a truck. They should have quit about ‘95. Weren’t going to get any better than they were then. They were still pretty solid trucks and the E’s run pretty good. I’ve got a 5EK here on its third head and I’ve never had the pan off it. It idles at 25psi and holds 58psi with the oil at 200, why would I touch it.
