Chain you find there may or may not be transport certified chain. Check or it could be expensive. If the chain and hook are marked Transport 70 or G70 you’re good to go. If the hook isn’t stamped the same as the chain the DOT won’t count that one at the scale.Grumppy, CAXPT, HardwareHyena and 1 other person Thank this.

You can make your own as long as it's heavy enough for what you need, grade 70 is most common. I wouldn't buy used, I snapped a 1/2 chain the other day and it's only 3 years old. It was on a light load as well. Best of luck.
Flat Earth Trucker, CAXPT and HardwareHyena Thank this. -
As mentioned above, they've got to be Grade 70 and yes you absolutely can buy the appropriate chain and hooks and assemble them yourself.
jamespmack and CAXPT Thank this. -
You can assemble your own sure. I prefer to buy the studded reinforced type though. They cost a lot but if im throwing chains their about to get a workout.
MOBee, CAXPT and HardwareHyena Thank this. -
I was thinkin'. Could be bad but just buy any ol' chain and Dremel a grade 70 on the metal so it says grade 70?!

You go right ahead and when a weakened chain breaks due to an accident and the DOT inspects your load and hits you with a seperate fine for each chain broken or not and suspends your licence on the spot for too many CSA points. You can be proud of the 10 bucks per chain you saved.Ruthless, HoneyBadger67, BackwoodsGA and 11 others Thank this.

If you want to do about every 3rd link of the chain. Differs by manufacturer how may are skipped, but the chains are embossed full length.BackwoodsGA, MOBee, CAXPT and 1 other person Thank this.

Creates a stress riser in the steel. Not a good idea.

Good point. ☝️
Just don't see chains breaking unless you done already messed something else up, driving related, and that's not fault of the chain anyhow but...
