Cheap chain will snap pretty easily. I'd be suprised if just tightening a no grade chain from a hardware store wouldn't cause them to stretch out/snap. Pretty soft steel for the most part.

I’m not advocating for using less then grade 70 chain, but it is perfectly legal. The FMCSA even provides ratings for various grades and diameters in 393.108.

I bought my G70 chains used 35 years ago and Lebus snapped binders. I have never had an issue with them. The quality back in the days is not same as anything you buy today. I’ve compared a new G70 chain today vs mine, and there no comparison in the quality.

Also rereading my post i realized it could be construed as me talking tire chains. So for claritys sake i mean this stuff 1/2" X 20' Grade 80 Alloy Binder Chain Assembly we called it studded because of how it tended to pinch and rip the crappy cheap tarps we used in the oilfield especially using the larger sizes.

Check it out, 5x 20 footers for grade 100 , add ends, (showing you g100 because their halfdrum of g80 is identical in price) be only slightly more expensive i think when you count chain ends (probably buy g80s from us cargo control at 23$ an end (call and in bulk youll get it closer to 20$each) and they ARE rated for overhead lifts then)
(Edit to reflect marginally higher price, but for better product too)Attached Files:
