Hey, I’m a reefer driver (lease) at prime thinking of switching to flatbed soon. Just wanted to know what the pay is like on prime's flatbed side. I’m almost a year into reefer and would like to know what I’m getting into pay wise. Hopefully it’s the same or more.

I can't speak to Prime but good luck on the transition and I hope you enjoy it. I think it's always a good idea to get different experience. I run flatbed/step deck as an O/O. You will hate having to tarp a load in the freezing rain while the wind is blowing 30 miles an hour. However, you will get used to delivery times between 8 and 5 Monday through Friday. Also, an hour wait to load or unload is usually considered a long wait for me.

Been a long time since I trained at Prime but I think going out with a trainer who pulls flats would be very helpful. At that time they charged for everything that it would take to do the job and since you are set up for reefers, they may want to put you in a different truck.

Just some thoughts. Your mileage may vary.

I used to do flatbed at Prime from ‘17 to ‘19 and made pretty decent money as a L/O. However, you will get tired of the BS sometimes. Pretty generic freight across the board with some outliers that tend to be a bit more specialized. But I highly suggest asking to go out with a trainer for a few weeks to get an idea of how to secure loads.
