Stevens Transport

Under Texas law a company may opt out of the state workers comp, and be self insured. the coverage has to equal or better the states workers comp, and Stevens is self insured, which means you get hurt on the job, you go to dallas, to be treated, and to recover. And they will put you on limited duty, running errands around the yard, while you recover.

 

I'm still out here just finished my 5 weeks. The trainer I was assigned and myself didn't really mesh but I stayed with him anyway just to prove to myself nothing was gonna stop me.I was assigned an alliance trainer the things I did get from him helped me decide to go lease. I am finally home after 7 weeks! Got through Orientation 1 and my first training session of 5 weeks which was extended due to holiday season. Had to spend Christmas at the lovely motel out on Broadway that Stevens uses for trainees. Not much fun there.

So far there hasn't been much to enjoy at all. I did fine and learned a lot, but there is a certain amount of stress being cooped up with someone that you don't really care for after a week.

My trainer and I were polar opposites. I'm a very technical, very white guy. My trainer was a black guy and self professed hustler (and proud of it). There were MANY misunderstandings based on our communication gaps alone. There were times he thought I was being "disrespectful" and I had absolutely NO IDEA how he could possibly think that. There were 2 times he almost kicked me off the truck and one time that I almost left.

We both stuck it out tho. In the end, I think we were both happy we did, and we learned a LOT from each other.

Only 2 things really caused me any worry. Going too fast for the situation and being very fatigued. And both of those are under my control, so I know I'll be fine.

You are VERY MUCH A NUMBER as a trainee. To think otherwise or to expect otherwise would be a mistake. The sheer number of trainees that filter through Stevens dictates that this is really the only way they can handle this part of the business.

I've decided to stay at Stevens for one year then make an informed decision, not just up and leave because one or two things bother me.

That is a concern to me. They the company and their doctors will decide if you are ready for work or not.
Do you have to stay in Dallas even if you are not able to work light duty?

 

What was he netting on his lease per year?

As far as I know, all treatments and recover must take place in dallas. Just from what I have observed, and been told by people that are doing light duty on the yard.

 

From what I have seen, the light duty folks don't seem like a happy bunch. It appears they have been given administrative tasks such as shredding paper, filing paperwork, and running errands for people.
