It is all relative. PA gives a bit more on IFTA than the others, not a biggy on one time deal. Just talking. We always fueled in Youngstown going into "deep" east, which has at least $0.50 upcharge from pre PA states. I don't go east anymore, so care less.

I hear you. Yea I don't recall now if he was going east or west but either way he was either in NJ 30 min prior or about to be in NJ in 30 min so I know there were better selections along the route. The joys of having a driver who doesn't care about your or your equipment as much as you care about them...
goga Thanks this. -
As long as the driver does timely job and IS safe, I would not be worried about spending a bit more on his "negligence" with the fuel.
-
I agree, but in this particular case it was just another symptom of the problem. He was not timely, regularly late (even after having a whole weekend off and late Monday start, for example), not uncommon to take much longer routes than necessary (30-50 miles more, + tolls, on 120-150mi trips), not use equipment provided like a brand new Garmin OTR GPS then get lost, and probably most importantly would not do proper inspections which could have led to more costly roadside repairs and lost jobs but thankfully I caught by happenstance during regular PMs. Ultimately it was not a great fit and he went back to company driving for other reasons. And the search for a new driver begins again... such is life.
-
Search is a good thing. Wonder why you are keeping such drivers after "probation" period and seeing them not worthy your attention..
-
Tried to pm but I can't yet. He was with me for 7 weeks. I stand by my prior post of trying not to micromanage but I do believe there is a difference between not micromanaging and not giving attention. There was a lot of handholding and probably more attention than ever should be necessary, but I believed in the kid and truly wanted to see him succeed especially with a young family at home. So an issue would arise, it would be addressed, it would be good for a bit, and either come up again or different issue come up.
-
If you are not micromanaging, he should not be microscrewing. It is not attention or anything else, it is basic work performance. "Do it well or go to hell" kind of thing. Did not mean to be mean, it is just a saying that circles out there.
-
All good, appreciate the exchange. Ultimately there was a generational element in there as well that goes beyond just this industry. The work ethic and professionalism lacked.goga Thanks this.

I’ve found more benefit in letting my guys fuel around their log-books than a few cents at the pump. If you piss away an hour to save .05c/gal on 240 gallons of fuel, you just spent $125 to save $12.
-
What do you mean by "piss away an hour"? Usually it is all in the same direction, different exits, but still on the way. Exmpl: Henderson, NE x342 vs York, NE x353 always ~ $.30 less.. x240
