    While I agree it is more difficult to finance an older truck, there are lenders that will approve loans on older equipment. And trust me, a truck with no emissions components are easier to work on, have less engine problems, and lastly it is really really nice to be eld exempt.

    I owned a couple of rigs with the 3406 B and 13 speed , they were not Pete’s , they were Ford LTL 9000s
    Same engine trans and rear axles as a Pete or KW but less than half price since it didn’t have the status .

    the older mechanical engines use more fuel than the computer ones but that will balance out when you are not sitting at a shop for days and days and days waiting on sensor or computer from china .


    The mechanical cats and Cummins were very reliable engines .
    Just don’t mess with the pumps .
    Always got a laugh when a friend of mine would buy a rig with a 3406 and screw with the pump and then a month or three later they are complaining that the engine blew .

    not a fan of the flat top sleepers though
    Although it’s not that hard to swap the sleeper or raise it up and lower the floor and put some chrome around the bottom ,
    I’ve done that to the old rigs in the 80s before the stand up walk in sleepers had been invented yet.

    Good luck finding an LTL 9000 today. RE: Flat top sleepers. The deal was, with all that Cat power, you didn't need aerodynamics,,,:biggrin_25522:,,what headwind?

    also when my 900 was getting inframe I stole my uncles 89 Pete day cab with a 400 BC, 13 speed, and 3.70s, to pull my reefer around the north east and was averaging 5.8 mpg, which I thought was pretty decent for a 30 year old truck

    I’d also have no problem with a flat top, but I don’t live in my truck either.

    I would definitely opt for the 6NZ but probably wouldn't care much for the super 10 unless I'd be running I-10 most of the time. I drove an 03 KW W9 6NZ 18 speed pulling a tanker in the oilpatch and loved that hoe! It would pull a mountain and you can just drive it like a 10 when empty or light. The cost to overhaul one is pretty steep though but probably not out of the ballpark than what it would cost to go through any other engine.

    On a side note if you go with the 6NZ you might want to straight pipe it :) the you can tell the sound of a 6NZ a mile off... fair warning it might cause an erection

    Why does everyone say you can shift an 18 like a 10......it has a 9 speed shift pattern.

    Not bustin no ones balls I’m genuinely curious. Have 9’s (obviously auto’s have took over I guess I’m thinking just before that time frame) become a thing of the past and few have seen one or just habit of always driving a 10.

    I don’t know why there’s any question. Ones ELD and speed limiter exempt and the others not.
