Chinatown has already recommended these people to you, but I will bring them to your attention, again--with them, they will pay you to train--& later.....you can progress up from flatbed on to oversized/step-deck/multi-axle--without changing employers (very cool):
No Experience? No problem! — R. E. West Transportation (rewest.com)
&
Services — R. E. West Transportation (rewest.com)
Be sure to check out their "no bull" sheet, too........on :
Hiring Process — R. E. West Transportation (rewest.com)
Another advantage with them--they're a much smaller company than many of the other starter flatbed companies out there--so it will have a more "family" feel to it. Odds are also much higher you will also meet (and know) the owner(s) of the company.
Total disclosure: I don't/haven't worked for them or with them (past or present)--I've just seen/heard good things about them in this area.

I work in recruiting over here as part of my duties. All you need is a continuous time line. It doesn't matter if it says "unemployed" or "self employed," it just has to be a continuous timeline for at least 36 months for federal records compliance. Your last month in school is accounted for, as you were in trucking school. The time you were working odd jobs, go ahead and put "self-employed" and under remarks, put "cleaning shops, handyman services, auto body repair, *whatever you were doing*, etc.". You verify with yourself that you were employed by you and were a good employee (LOL nobody is going to ask, because they know the answer in advance).
Just about all of the megas will still take you on, you just can't have a gap in reporting.Bizzarrogeorge, Another Canadian driver, jmarc77 and 1 other person Thank this. -
If I understand it correctly they only ask for that unbroken timeline to meet DOT requirements.Another Canadian driver and jmarc77 Thank this.

I really appreciate this. This is the information I needed to know. I owe you one! Thanks!Another Canadian driver Thanks this.

Basically all it is is they’re just trying to CYA because it’s a federal requirement to do employment verification on commercial drivers and they’re just trying to make sure their files are on par with the rules… Like many it said on here they don’t really care what you didjmarc77 Thanks this.

When I went from self employed to trucking I gave them my Fed Id#. Never was questioned about it except "what did you do". This was in '99.

Out of curiosity, do trucking companies look down upon rookies that worked a part time job prior to applying to first trucking job? I ask because TMC recruiter at school was confusing, telling me that I have to account for the days of the week that I wasn't working, and low and behold, I didn't get hired, though no reason was given. I've been wondering if that may be why.....thanks for any light you veteran truckers might shine on this sort of odd question!
-
Just list the company on your job application. Doesn't matter if it was part time or not. That's what I would do.
-
Just put down the Company you worked for, start date and end date..don’t confuse the idiot recruiters with “part time “. Let them assume it was full time employment.Bizzarrogeorge Thanks this.

PTL will work with you more than them RE West pricks will. Look for a beginning company that pays top dollar while training, will allow truck to go home for hometime, benefits, running area to your preference, etc.Bizzarrogeorge Thanks this.
