A guy in Houston has a full time job in the tech sector making $150G and makes over $100G extra by dumpster diving for electronics and other stuff, such as bicycles. He doesn't deal with food products and doesn't have the need to. He said, "Early Retirement."

Nowdays it's more easy just to throw something away, then give it for free to someone and receive lawsuit because you gave that "someone" not perfect tool, and he broke and fall or something happened to that person.
Say thanks to all this stupid lawyers of army eho ready to sue anyone anytime about anythingChinatown Thanks this. -
Lorrie bought a Kitchenaid Artisan mixer not a cheap item. It was missing 2 of the accessories. Called customer service about it they said we are sorry. She says so are you sending out the parts, they replied no just keep what you have and you can buy the accessories that is missing. She said hell no I don't want to pay extra the parts are supposed to be in the box. Rep said no we will be refunding you the full amount so you will just be buying the 2 items missing. Rep said it is just cheaper and less trouble doing that way. We both looked at each other and shook our heads. $399.99 showed back up in her account and she bought the $50.00 worth of mixers. It didn't make sense at all but according to them it does.

I worked for the Target DC in Woodland, Ca in the early 70s. If they had a damaged case they would toss it, even if only one piece was broken and the rest were fine. They would even break the good ones before tossing them. I saw them putting screwdrivers through some high dollar (for Target) car speaker sets just to make them unusable.

You would think if it were a safety issue with the bikes the manufacturer would have them cut the bike in half to prevent someone taking it from the trash, using it and potentially getting injured.
With the bike shortages those should sell like hotcakes. Last year if you wanted a bike 9 times out of 10 you'd have to order one and wouldn't see it for months.JoeyJunk Thanks this. -
Your typical retail big box store employee would end up cutting off an appendage.Flat Earth Trucker, Sirscrapntruckalot, AModelCat and 1 other person Thank this.

This is usually the rule. Sometimes it isn't but it's rare to be allowed to take the old stuff. I once worked for a grocery store, doing produce. Every night, we'd have to pull pre-packaged salads, before their sell by date. Same with produce, we'd have to pull out the "bad" produce. Customers knew we did this, and would wait by the dumpster close to the time we'd start tossing stuff. They would take anything that was still good.
Book store I worked at once, when we tossed out books or magazines, we had to rip the covers off, and then rip them in half, or some other way of defacing it. Couldn't donate them to a school, or library. Had to be trashed and thrown out. Other places, we had to destroy stuff then toss it in the dumpster. As said though in the quote, it's usually a manufacturer's rule, not the stores.
Man, it always made me mad to tear up books and magazines. I'm a big reader. Even the stuff I didn't like, it sucked trashing. It also sucked to throw out so much food that was still good. Never threw any bicycles away though.
Most places, at lest here in the states will have signs or a fence, or something up if they don't want people in their dumpsters. Dumpster diving is big business if your in the right kind of city/town/etc. My sandbar...horrible place for it. We lock up most of our dumpsters and just about all of them have no trespassing signs on them, or a camera, or both.
Far as a bike shortage...I'm lucky. I got a collection of bikes from over the years thanks to drunk tourists just deciding to randomly leave their bikes in my yard, or a neighbors. Oh and far as cutting a bike in half ... that takes time and time that can be better spent doing something else. That's how management will see it anyways. You have to time to cut up a bicycle, you got time to make some more sales, unload a truck, put away a pallet, etc.
Some of the people I worked with in retail, I wouldn't trust to cut a pancake safely let alone cut up a bike.
Or as Joey said..
Just my thoughts from when I did retail, for all I know nowadays it's all different.
