I’ve seen it done but I will provide a resource to accredited sources. I don’t think it’s published anywhere as a rule, it’s just a loophole which probably means they don’t say it can’t be done so they don’t stop you from doing it.

I took my class B with air brakes..... I took my class A in a hotshot. Air brake endorsement was still on the class A. Same thing. Doesn't matter when you take what test as long as you take it. You can take a test with a manual as long as its in a class A or B commercial vehicle. Pass the test & that's the end of it.
In the scenario of the OP, lets say you only want automatic restriction initially to drive a class 8. You change jobs & need a manual for the new job in a class B. Just take the manual test, remove the auto restriction & you can have a class A with no restrictions on trannys. You can drive a class B with a Class A license.
The OP is correct. As long as you take the test, it dont matter what your driving as long as you pass the manual driving test in a class A or B... class 6 or 8 vehicle. Doesnt matter ... same thing.D.Tibbitt, Bean Jr., buddyd157 and 1 other person Thank this. -

It's not unheard of for test examiners to make mistakes like that, but that discrepancy could pop up later when the CDL is renewed. Around here in Wyoming, about the only testing we see outside of CDL schools are people trying to remove the automatic restriction. You do not need to attend a school to do that, but I could see why some might sign with a school just to have access to a truck. Most of the ones removing the restriction around here already have a job that wants them to start driving a manual so they train them at work and let them use the company truck for testing.
But for the record, the only things that require a school are:
Class A or B for the first time;
upgrading from a B to an A;
Passenger endorsement;
School Bus endorsement;
Hazmat endorsement.
One note about the Passenger endorsement: if you have a Class A already and add a Passenger endorsement to it, the endorsement will be restricted to Class B vehicles only, unless of course you test for the endorsement with a Class A passenger vehicle, and there aren't many of those around. -

One may let you do it the way you say and another may make you take the backing maneuvers and road test in a semi with a trailer…I want to say it’s either VA or PA that basically makes you test all over again..
