Got my first W-2 in the mail today finally. It is from Marten Transport. for the month I worked for them I didn't make but $1,458.83 gross. Howeve they only took $2.89 in federal. Does this sound right considering I made under $1,500 with them? I filled out the W-2 the same in the application as I have with any other company and have payed in over to make sure I wouldn't be caught having to pay in. I'm hoping this is correct and I don't have to pay in. But if so my other W-2's should be able to help cover it sense I have no money in hand to pay it. Can anyone shed some light on this? My state tax , SS, and Medicare are all paid in full. It's only federal that seem's to be an issue.
Issue with company driver tax's.

It would be based on the type of pay period involved, earnings during the period, exemptions claimed.
You would also have received pay stubs that reflected the amounts withheld and should have been able to tell what your taxes withheld were.
Also, if the weekly checks were low, then the withholding would have been also. -
Make's sense. However, Marten has a requirment that you must be on per diem for the first 6 month's then you can opt out if you like so I was getting hit with it. Another thing is that I never received a pay stub or statement. There payroll statement's were all done online only and I didn't have a laptop at the time so I have no way to view these files as they are no longer avalible.

Per diem will also reduce the income withholding.
As far as the online ability of the statements, they are also required to send these by mail. It is to be done when requested by the employee. They cannot restrict it to online only.Skunk_Truck_2590 Thanks this. -
Oh ok. Yea they told me they didn't send them by mail so I never asked anymore about it. Think that would have been my mistake but I'll next time this may come up. I just can't figure out why they only took $2.89 out of almost $1,500. Seem's really shy. I hope I don't have to pay in because I can't afford it.

I really doubt it will kill you.
Even if it was the only job last year, the standard exemption and personal exemption cover you. -
Yes, it is correct.
When you started working there, you filled out a W-4. The company figures your pay, and figures if you work there all year you are going to make X amount of dollars. Then they look at your exemptions you filled out on the W-4, and arrived at what your federal income tax deduction should be.
Lots of people freak out when they see that little or no federal income tax is withheld from their paycheck.
Not to worry.
