I am just amazed by so many people not knowing their cost per mile .Just met a new o/o today out of chicago il running a 300 mile load for 2.5$/mile and that was an awesome rate for him . He got a 100 k truck with 15% interest ,20k insurance with fuel, maintenance plates etc puts his operating cost at roughly 1.6$ per mile without driver pay . He didnt looked too happy when i told him what he was taking home that was 270$ for a full day of work . This is to all the new o/o dont look at that 800-900$that broker is offering you . Calculate your cost per mile because most of you are making same as a local company driver.
What is your operating cost per mile (poll)?

Depends on how many miles I run, but gonna say max is gonna be in the 1.50 - 1.80 with a decent wage. Nothing paid for and brand new truck and pretty new trailer.

Well. Three weeks ago I did a radiator, emissions issue, PM'd the truck, washed the truck, PM'd the APU.
$7500
Operating cost that week ( before fuel, overhead, you get paid??? ) was about $5 mile.
The OM was not pleased.Another Canadian driver, Vampire, tscottme and 6 others Thank this. -
While running your own Authority I figure loads between running in zone #1 areas such as Michigan, Ohio, Indiana Etc. Are reasonable between $2.80 to 3.80 I saw this week (as things seem to be slowing getting better). With my expenses the minimum earning $7k minimum I could still bank $1273 @ 2500 mi's for myself. And even though on a 40 hr week I could pull in $1300/week (mind you that's hand bombing boxes customer to customer etc.) there is just something better when you're working for yourself without Management.
Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
As mentioned
The PM rate will vary
Mine is around $1.19 with fuel at what it is now but I run
Others with my set up that run 60,000 miles will have a much different rate
And
Was this guy running or planning to run like this all the time or was it something that filled in a gap?Another Canadian driver, Vampire and Siinman Thank this. -
I think what some miss in the company Vs owner scenario is with a company you only get X days off per?
As an owner. Many of us work way less than company drivers and still make more bottom lineDaTruckerMan, Opendeckin, Another Canadian driver and 4 others Thank this. -
Actually, the more I talk to other drivers, I’m of the belief that most that claim to know their numbers don’t even really know their numbers…
Im pretty ocd about numbers, and am fairly on top of my numbers, but the only number I know for sure that sticks out; fuel costs me nearly .40 more a mile than it did this time last year.
I own my truck. I have zero debt. I have a low cost of living.
There’s a buttload of folks that are drowning trying to keep their nose above water and they don’t even realize their collar is wet yet.

I think people that fixate on spreadsheets and this, that, the other per mile drive themselves bananas.
My P&L is current through this year, but do you really need to sit down and do a P&L to know if you're making money?
I guarantee everyone's operating cost is WAY up over last year just because of fuel.
Last year I had about $10.5K in repairs and maintenance.
This year I'm already at $10.5K.
Year before was about $8K.
I have 3 weeks this year where I lost money at the end of the week. The one week $5K.
It takes YEARS to come up with an average cost.
Everyone always throws out," Well you didn't figure paying a driver."
Yea? How many figure truck replacement?
These cost analysis threads make The OM crazy.Czar_Zero, Another Canadian driver, BennysPennys and 8 others Thank this.
