I never brought it up with them, but my record said it all! If they would have broached the subject, I would have agreed to that. The next company I hire on with, if they are any good, I'll see what they say about "remaining on the rolls" as they call it, while I'm overseas.

Interesting thing has happened here in the Philippines though in the last two days, a former dictators son has been elected president. So things aren't going to get better here in the future. I will be back in Phoenix by weeks end to pick up the summer driving season.

I've applied to 7 companies, and all but 3 have expressed interest. The companies that didn't express interest are Crete, Indian River Transport and Kold Trans.

The company has to do all the same paperwork for a rehire as they do for a new hire.

I-9, W2, background, mvr and drug test, sign company policy acknowledgement, benifits sign uup, etc. They have to give the driver a skills test. Even if they get it all done in one day, it's going to cost at least $500.

Then add in transportation, a hotel room, and paying the driver and we're easily pushing $1,000.

Then it takes a rehire a little bit of time to get their 'sea legs back ' and start running profitably.

Or that could just plan it and treat it like a leave of absence , like maternity leave or sick leave .
Then the re hire costs would be zero since they never left .

To do has its own costs. They still have to maintain the driver qualification file, even when the driver is on a leave of absence. They still gave to do a skills test and a drug test.

All that is doable, IF the driver has communicated his intentions. We have a guy who works 6-7 months then goes home to Greece for 2-3 months and comes back to work. He's done it for 7 years now.

There are always costs to be borne, the question is "do we want to pay for it?" In the op's case, he never set it up since he looks unreliable.
