Rooftop AC unit

Have you looked in the dash to see if the wires for a/c control are hanging out of the harness somewhere unused? If the wires are there already I bet it would be pretty easy to retro the factory air stuff out of another White or some of the Volvo-White-GMC’s that may be laying around into your truck. That’s probably worth looking into at least.

 

I thank it wound would need to be wired directly to the alternator. There are some 180 - 200 amp alternators these days that might do that at idle. Yours will not. I am not sure how they will stand up to that amount of current continual.
At current fuel prices a generator wound pay for itself in short order over idling the truck.

 

I thank your cab is the same as a Road Boss II. Maybe later but the conventionals shared the same cabs. That gives you a lot more options to look at.

 

You're not going to run 50 amps AC on an alternator. When I get close to 20 amps, the voltage drops too much to keep up and the inverter resets. If you try to run a generator while driving, it will probably shut down due to low oil protection activating from the movement of the truck. I have plugged my mini split into the inverter while idling, and dash voltage drops to 12.4 while cooling on a hot, sunny day when my truck AC was not working. It may have eventually leveled off somewhere around 13.1 I'm guessing, but I didn't stay parked long enough to find out. I'm pretty sure it's only a 15 amp appliance.

 

An RV rooftop A/C has a peak load of about 21A. Larger RVs with two A/Cs, microwave, coffee pot and other accessories will have a 50A service.

 

You just wanting to retrofit your existing A/C or trying for sleeper setup? If just trying to get A/C look into Vintage air that they use in hotrods Vintage Air Builder Series - Vintage Air. @W900AOwner did this with his truck and it is the plan for my 82.
