I have a 2012 Columbia 120 glider kit, s60 12.7 detroit.
I had a shop change my alternator and now on the hwy my truck is charging at 14.9v.
I'm not going by the dash gauge, my xantrex inverter had a digital gauge on it.
The 2 sense wires are hooked up to the 2 bottom terminals with 1 terminal at the top empty.
Does anybody know if that's right or the color combination and post combination that its suppose to be?
I've had 2 alternators on the truck since I've had it and both NEVER went over 14.3.
Thanks!

Near dead batteries will do that. Bad alternator regulator will do that. Bad inverter meter will do that. Have you tested the power from "new" alt with a normal volt meter? If no, why no? How long alts serve on your engine before they have to be replaced? What is the reason for them to be replaced? How old the batteries are? Is the alt rebuilt "new", or new "new"?

Batteries 2 months old, fully charged
Alternator was noisy, bearings were bad, was doing an ac compressor, did the alternator same time.
Alternator was a little over 5 years old. Replaced it when I bought the truck, same thing, found noisy bearings when changing the belt.
New delco Remy alternator.
Just Checked with digital volt meter, it agrees with inverter.
So, what post combination is suppose to be hooked up?Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
IIRC you have a Cascadia? If so, open the PNDB fuse panel door. Check the fuse labeled "alt sense wire"

What alternator do you have on your truck? 36SI....28SI??
There are ways to look up the pin outputs and their function--this is rather easy if you know how to research them. I can help.Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
This is the alternator I have. Wonder what I should have on the sense wires, voltage wise, when it at a high idol, 1000rpm?
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
You should have the battery voltage on the sense wire. The wire needs to be on the S terminal and hooked up directly to the battery positive terminal.
The other wire is for the alternator light or a relay.
The capped terminal on the top is for a tach sense wire.
if the sense wire is in the alternator light terminal “L”, then you may see high voltage out of the alternator.
That said the sense wire is usually the larger of the two, which makes it look like it is on the wrong terminal.
the best way to find out is take the wire off the sense terminal, check for any voltage with the key off, there should be voltage if the wire is the sense wire.Magoo1968, Rideandrepair and Elroythekid Thank this. -
