I would have to guess cost and reliability. Those turbos aren't cheap and they don't seem to last nearly as long as a regular turbo.

Thing that sucks is the VGT really gives the jake good holdback.

They aren’t cheap and really only go 500,000. However like you said, you lose most of your jake and they really are more efficient. In terms of performance they are better than a fixed geometry turbo.

If you're lucky. I know folks who've had them fail within a year. The Cat and Detroit turbos went at least 4 years.

Pretty extreme conditions they put the trucks through though mind you.

Had a 6.7 in a 09 Pete medium duty wrecker eat 3 turbos in 75,000 miles. 3 grand a wack. Cummins stated after the third they would not warranty anymore. Advised to lower idle time. Yea right on a tow truck? Delete and and retained vgt. At 350k miles truck was traded in and only required one more.

But I feel the holset water/oil cooled turbos on the ISX is plan garbage. Dropping it in a dumpster is to nice.

The HT60 Holset from a N14 was a solid million mile turbo with care. Great piece.

I put a lot of miles on one. The turbo’s aren’t the issue on the isx. The heads are the weak point.
