Hi everyone. I’m based in Minnesota and have considered attending the trucking school here in town. However, I’m only interested in getting a class B. The school I’ve been looking at offers a course for class B but they more than doubled their tuition rates since Covid started. They started out at $2500 and are now about $5600.

with that said, the course appears to only offer instruction on automatics. They used to do manual but my guess is low demand meant they did away with it.

anyway, what sort of job opportunities are there for a new driver with a class b? I know that endorsements will make a difference but my concern is companies won’t hire new drivers unless they have some experience under their belts. Curious if any veteran drivers here can shed more light on the industry and hiring process.

Why do you want only a CDL-B when you can get a CDL-A and still drive CDL-B trucks.
    CDL-B = can only drive CDL-B trucks
    CDL-A = can drive CDL-B and CDL-A trucks.

Some box truck companies require a CDL-A

I understand that. The reason is that I have zero interest in driving tractor trailers. I know it makes more sense to get a class A but I don’t even know if I’ll like the industry. I’d be paying out of pocket as well and don’t have the funds to pay for class A tuition. I also don’t really want to go the paid training route because then I’d have to commit to working for that company. If I get a class B I think I’d have slightly more flexibility as far as who I want to work for.

You may qualify for free cdl school through the Minnesota WIOA Program.
WIOA - Minnesota Association of Workforce Boards
As I posted, many trucks, not tractor-trailers, require Class-A CDL. To find a decent box truck or similar job, you may need a CDL-A.
This doesn't benefit me either way, I'm just informing you how it is in trucking.

I got my Class B license training free when I took a job as a school bus driver 22 years ago.
