Had shop check it out on the way with stethoscope and mechanic said it’s smooth all the way around but heard lilttle chirping in the front of the valve cover.but the noise is mostly from the back of the valve cover.he’s assuming the gear lash is off bit.bullgear was changed during the overhaul.im taking to to shop who rebuilt it on monday and see what they find.

it’s the stock VGT turbo with electronic actuator.checked out the turbine wheel and whole turbo everything seems fine.

Jake's were tight, but what about exhaust valve settings?

Your post had me bit confused lol
But the exhaust valves were within specs! I just can’t wrap my head around on how the jakes could cause the noise even when they’re disengaged.

Sounds like an exhaust manifold leak, or crack in bellows pipe of your manifold but I am sure you have checked that well. Someone revving it up while hitting Jake's and soapy water spraying helps pinpoint leaks. Jake's are overdue for tune up kit. When pulling Jake's, might as well do a good inspection of rockers, valve springs and injector springs. I had MX with a tick similar to yours and found broken spring in Jake's, but different design.

Almost sounds like a cold exhaust leak, or a loose heat shield.
Maybe take the shields off without breaking any bolts, or studs, and check it like spsauerland said. My 12.7 makes a lot of Noise when cold started. I think it’s normal, from timing being advanced till it warms up, then it goes away. I’m assuming the noise you hear is the consistent high pitch pinging. I wonder if an injector could be the cause? Noise sounds like timing is advanced, maybe an injector, seems to be traveling through exhaust into turbo, maybe heat shield is acting like a tuning fork, making it sound that way. I don’t know if that’s possible or not. Being consistent like that’s probably a good thing. I also wonder if the VGT can cause pinging, or pre detination, if it’s not working right.
