The whining is because the most drivers wants to unload the product themselves so that they can keep the lumper fees. Understandably everyone wants to make more money. especially when the drivers have to sit in the truck for hours without pay.
I could love to unload the trailer quickly and keep the the lumper fees, thereby saving my 14/70 clock. but the dock mafia controls the dock and equipments.
so things will be same as always. -
Maybe you in your infinite wisdom can explain why an artifact of stevedoring about 40-50 years after it made any amount of sense then, why it exists WITHIN wholly receiver controlled warehouses. Why its in trucking of all places instead of only train and ship terminals.
If youre going to tell me im wrong, how about explaining exactly why it makes good sense, you seem to be in possession of this treasured knowledge, but prefer to just tell people theyre wrong with nothing to back up your assertion.
There is a time and place for lumping and fees, even in trucking today, but those are exceptional edge cases, not the norm. For the vast majority of cases, the time for it was years ago, and the place for it was decentralized bulkbreaking in warehouses that served many other companies, not dcs that exclusively serve their own stores. -
If you dont understand how analogies work, not sure how to help you
My arguement isnt that lumping and their fees dont exist or should not exist accross the board, its that the archaic way in which they used to function 40 years ago when there was no better way to do things has no place in 99% of the places they are used.
Cash or physical efs/comcheck only?
Filtering through 4 hands instead of being directly addressed by the receiver who ultimately pays anyway and actually contracts with the lumping "company"? Preposterous
I dont get a say in how other people run their buisness, true. I can still tell them when I encounter ridiculous models exactly how stupid they are. -
You’ve done a internet search, so of course you have more knowledge on the subject.
I only do the actual work
Wasted Thyme and tarmadilo Thank this. -
Riiiight, youve never learned anything without firsthand hands on 15 years experience...
Ive never been shot, but the internet says its not a fun time, maybe theyre 100% wrong and im missing out
Youre on the internets, be a solution, not more of the problem -
You’re not on my schedule today and tomorrow doesn’t look good either.

In the last year I’ve had to pay cash or have a physical check for a lumper exactly zero times. Click the link on your phone and pay, then go in and get your bills.
tarmadilo Thanks this. -
Well, like I said avoid the bashas' DC in Chandler. It's cash, physical efs check, or physical (blue only) comdata check. That's it. No links on the phone. That place is definitely the worst shipper/receiver I've ever been to. And it wasn't just because of the lumper bs!
-
So here's your answer. From a business sense. It makes sense. The receiver doesn't have to worry about payroll or possible work Comp issues for the employees working there docks. The outside company does. Ultimately the receiver is paying for them in the shipping charges from the shipper. Sure in a perfect world. The receiver would either just hirer the workers or pay the lumper company directly. But they don't.
But for the driver it ultimately doesn't matter. Since it never comes out of our money.
I've been off the road for the last year. Dealing with cancer. Should be back out there by the first of the year. But I dealt with lumper fees all the time.
The only inconvenience drivers have is if company, calling dispatch for the EFS code and getting a receipt, and o/o getting a receipt.
If that was too difficult for you. Then I can't imagine how you handle the really stressful parts of the job. -
