Ok, had a driver walk through the door today looking for direction. A few years back, he was in a motorcycle accident, so he let his CDL/Med lapse. In January, he had a DOT physical and took the CDL exams in TX to get his license back, but never found a truck for the skills portion. He walked through our door in MN with a now-expired TX CDL Permit, a good medical card, and a 30-year commercial driving history... wondering how he can get his CDL reinstated to get back to work.
The question is, will any driver whose CDL lapses be required to go through ELDT? If so, how does the Case CDL program in MO work for out-of-state residents?
The recruiter is headed to the DMV to answer the question, but I am pretty sure they will say ELDT only.

Local DMV folks said if he had a license in the past, no ELDT will be required.
We'll see how that pans out when he takes the tests again...Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
I had hazmat in the past, but let it lapse.
To get hazmat back, I had to take an eldt course.
It was ridiculous.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
There is specific regs for it, but I don't care enough to dig them up.

However the long and the short of it is how the particular dmv manager is interpreting their training and how much a person wants to fight it.
There's a newish member on here who was told multiple times by multiple sources that he would need eldt to get his cdl back, but the final clerk told him he didn't need to do all that - after he did it.
To this case - lapsed cdl, lapsed permit, different state - my bet is he's going to be forced (legitimately or not) to go through eldt.Another Canadian driver and ZVar Thank this. -
I live in Mn and I dropped my CDL (was back in the 80s, so this may have changed). All I had to do was retake the driving test to get it back.

An alternative to giving up someone's CDL is just change your DOT Medical Self-Certification with your state to one of the 4 options that does NOT require you keep a valid medical certificate (Free). Another option is to pay for a new DOT Medical exam and then submit an updated Self-Certification form with your state.
I'm not sure there is ever a good reason to surrender someone's CDL even if you never intend to use it again.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -

- Upgrade their regular driver's license to a Class A or Class B permit on or after 02/07/22;
- Adds a Passenger (P), School Bus (S), and/or Hazardous Materials (H/X) endorsement on or after 02/07/22
