Stop Parking on the Shoulder! !

And also stop pulling onto the highway from a dead stop on the shoulder...I see near accidents caused by it all the time..

 

The truck crossing the fog line onto the shoulder is equally guilty. Should be no reason to hit anything on the shoulder if drivers are maintaining their proper lane positions. Assuming the stopped truck was completely out of the travel lane.

How do you know that the truck on the shoulder wasn't broken down?

 

We dont, but in 9 out of 10 of these the trucker stopped for something other then a breakdown. So saying stop stopping on the shoulder when empirical evidence says most of these cases are not breakdowns is the correct response.

 

I agree to many park on the shoulder for no reason. I would also think it would be reasonable to agree if I am parked on the shoulder for legitimate reasons I wouldn't have to worry about some d bag professional driver side swiping me. It is a breakdown lane for a reason. I know it gets abused, but when our founders came up with this they never invisioned drivers would be so bad that they would run into stationary objects that aren't even in their lane.

9 out of 10 on the shoulder on an interstate? I think you're way off there.

I keep saying this. If I'm broken down or I had to pull over for some other legitimate reason, and someone hits me, that's OK, but if I stop for a not permitted reason that's not ok? The only thing that is consistent is a guy who didn't maintain his lane. If he stays in his lane, then there will be no collision, regardless of why I'm stopped.
