XPO Logistics Road Test

well I’m not in LaSalle but I’ve spent some time with Xpo. I took my road test in a manual, lasted like 45 mins. Longest road I’ve ever taken. If u don’t feel comfortable in a manual I would just talk to them about it. I could be wrong but I think they hired a couple guys with automatic only licenses at the terminal I was at. As far as dock time as the bottom guy, I was literally on the dock until they either gave me a via or let us go. Without a via, anywhere between 6-8 hours. Depending on freight and what time I arrived.

 

Also, at my terminal the highest run we had was like 500 something miles with dock work. Honestly depending on how far out other the other terminals are you will probably be on the dock way more than driving anyways, good luck to you though. You can make great money with them. I just got tired of being on the dock all night .

 

I work out of a 28 door facility in Idaho, about 15 trucks, and most automatics. They have been phasing out manual trans trucks for awhile, so just a few higher mileage trucks waiting to retire left in the fleet...
Driving a manual trans is just like learning to ride a bike, once you learn you never forget. You may be a little rusty to start, but I doubt you'll crash and burn on your road test just for that.
As for your job duties, you will be an extra board, low seniority DSR for awhile. This means you will have to work whatever shift they assign you from day to day. You will be on the dock at times, other times you will be running deliveries, or doing linehaul runs...
It will be a little tough paying your dues as the low man on the totem pole for an indefinite amount of time, but if you stick it out and get a decent bid, in the future you could be doing a cushy day shift meet & turn, running Monday thru Friday and making a good living.
Hang in and see what comes along, that's my advice.

 

I worked out of Lasalle (XLA) for almost 29 years. Don't worry about the trans I think they only have one or two manuals left at Lasalle. I wouldn't bring it up but if you're in a manual and having problems they will be real good about going back and getting a auto. The driver trainers there are real good guys. As far as runs starting out and for a long time it's going to suck. You'll work a lot of Saturdays .You'll be on the dock everyday even if you drive a little. You'll also be in the yard spotting a lot . The good news is XPO hasn't figured out why everyone is leaving. They think it's the money so they keep paying more. You will be making tons of money. When I left I was getting 7 weeks vacation. I went to Walmart and I'm not home everyday but get more time off than I did with 7 weeks vacation at XPO and the money is simular. The ONLY good thing about XPO is your home everyday, just not for very long lol. Good luck
