Somethings, certain women, gators and snapping turtles, should not be picked up, ever.

Going to see family for the holiday. About 450 miles each way. Trying to do all secondary roads. 250 yesterday. Grabbed a hotel downtown and spent about 4 hours walk-in to some bars and restaurants.

I’ll do the other 200 this morning. No plan on leaving there to head back home. Looks like I may have to dodge some rain on the way home…

I really though this was just a bar hopping bike but with a new used seat it’s really a great road tripper. 4ED4CFB5-E6A9-4E4D-BEA6-643EB7ED697E.jpeg C6C8DA90-DF0F-40D6-AA95-1367BB2BBDFD.jpeg C08D62A0-5E45-4346-8984-4749D16F9959.jpeg 29E11970-9A8D-487F-974F-F3A24C539475.jpeg 23807034-3EE9-4318-8108-3C38D555C47A.jpeg 984C0C5C-D8A4-4C2C-80EF-4C033381AC82.jpeg

I remember pulling out of the yard in a 1978 W900A heading for Massachusetts, with a fuel check for $150 in my pocket. Things have changed for sure….

Old A model had original torsion bar suspension on it, 420 Cummins with a 12513 transmission…

Seen a brand new, purple Aspen tridem bed and tandem jeep/tandem booster rolling through Acheson this morning. Add in the brand new Peterbilt pulling it I'd say that was an easy half a mill right there.

I just recall riding with dad. You carried enough cash for 2 weeks at a time. If I recall about 40-45 cents per gallon. My favorite stop was Kim's fuel stop in Woodville, Ohio. Small block building and a block shower room. Kim wore a change belt and looked like a WWF wrestler. Dont think anyone made fun of his name ever. Nothing fancy about it. But man did he hookup ever kid that came in the place. Candy, pops. He send every kid out of the place with way to much junk! Him and Dad always had to have along BS session. The he would ask, What state do you need a receipt for" and dig under the counter.

Funny how you can recall stuff.

In ‘79 I used to run Toronto to Miami and back on around $300, including reefer fuel one way. What’s worse than fuel is the trucks. I bought four new trucks between Dec ‘79 and Mar ‘81. Going by a quick interweb check what I paid for all four would leave you $80k short of a 2022 W900 and a new Big Bubba to tow with it.

We came out of Denver every Monday morning with full 500 gallon tanks and $1000.00 cash. We road to outside of Corpus Christy with heavy equipment or a utility/tool van that also contained explosives. Our first stop was, I think, outside of Big Springs. TX where the young man would fill, wash the windows, sweep out the floor boards and then park your truck while you had lunch and sweet tea. On the way out you left a tip for the waitress walked to the fuel desk paid for everything. They would then tell you where your truck was and give you the keys. I miss that truck stop.

And the phones at the trucker booths. Slide in next to a stranger and have him give the what the heck are you doing look, just in time for the phone to ring. The stranger would then try to eat and keep the cord out of this eggs. I had some moxie back then.
